Step-by-Step: Your NDIS Power Chair Funding Pathway
Step-by-Step: Your NDIS Power Chair Funding Pathway
1. Assessment
Start with an occupational therapy (OT) or Physiotherapy (PT) Inital assessment to determine your mobility needs.
Your clinician will evaluate your posture, range of motion, environment, goals, and functional capabilities to confirm whether a power chair is suitable.
Tip: Choose an clinician with complex rehab experience — they understand the clinical and functional requirements of powered mobility.
2. Trial
Once your therapist has completed your assessment, you’ll be referred for a product trial with a dealer or clinician.
Based on your function needs and goals, you’ll trial different models (for example, Edge 3 Stretto, 4x4 Outback, or Edge 4) to find the right seating system, drive controls, and configuration for your daily use.
During the trial, a Quantum Rehab Product Specialist or a member of the Quantum Rehab Education Team can also attend in person to provide hands on support, assist with option selection, and help the clinician and participant explore the best solution together.
3. Quote & Documentation
Following the trial, your dealer will prepare a detailed quote outlining the recommended configuration, accessories, and setup. Your clinician will then complete the Assistive Technology assessment and supporting report for submission with your NDIS funding request.
The report explains why the equipment is required, how it supports your functional goals, and why a complex powered mobility and seating solution is the most appropriate option. Choosing Quantum means your clinician and dealer also have access to Quantum Rehab’s Education Team, made up of experienced Occupational Therapists specialising in wheelchair and seating prescription. This team provides mentoring, clinical consultation, and support for complex solutions, helping strengthen clinical reasoning and documentation to support prescription and funding outcomes.
4. NDIS Submission
Your clinician submits the completed Assistive Technology report through the NDIS portal, along with the quote and any supporting documentation.
The submission explains how the recommended equipment meets the NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria by showing that it:
· Relates directly to your functional needs and circumstances
· Supports your goals, independence, and participation in daily life
· Represents value for money over the life of the equipment
· Is safe, appropriate, and effective for your individual situation
5. Approval & Delivery
Once approved, Quantum Rehab coordinates with your Clinician and dealer for final setup and delivery.
Every Quantum power chair is assembled and configured locally in Melbourne and then adjusted for comfort and performance before handover.
Your dealer will also train you in safe operation and provide after-sales service, ensuring your new power chair continues to meet your needs.
What “Reasonable and Necessary” Means
The NDIS funds supports and equipment that are reasonable and necessary — a core principle of the scheme.
In simple terms, this means the power chair must:
· Relates directly to your functional needs and circumstances
· Supports your goals, independence, and participation in daily life
· Represents value for money over the life of the equipment
· Is safe, appropriate, and effective for your individual situation
Your therapist’s report will link each feature of your chair (like power tilt or elevating leg rests) to specific goals in your NDIS plan — such as independent mobility at home, work, or in the community. Choosing Quantum means your clinician also has access to Quantum Rehab’s Education Team, made up of experienced Occupational Therapists specialising in wheelchair and seating prescription. This team provides mentoring, clinical consultation, and support for complex solutions, helping strengthen clinical reasoning and documentation to support prescription and funding outcomes.
Helpful Tip
Pro Tip:
Before your assessment, think about your goals — where you want to go, what activities you’d like to do independently, and any challenges you face now. This helps your clinician and dealer match the right Quantum Rehab configuration to your lifestyle.
